Eleven years ago, Stuart Litjens, owner of Boulder Boats, was invited by a group of friends to join them for a day of boating on Lake Mead, and his life did a complete turnaround. During that time, he was enrolled at UNLV, he says, to learn all he could. In the space of one weekend, an entrepreneur was born. "I came home with a plan for what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, both business-wise and personally."

Since that eye opening weekend, Stuart has done just about everything right, when it comes to the buying and selling of boats. He learned all he could about the business, even though this was at the time when the world had entered a recession. Amazingly, this didn't affect the buying and selling of boats to a worldwide market, and Boulder Boats quickly became the largest boat dealer in the country! He saw it grow from a small dealership in Boulder City, where Stuart and his family live, to the largest two-story dealership, located at 615 W. Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson, Nevada.

Doing his homework, Stuart learned that the buying and selling of boats is a smart investment for the buying and selling customers. For example, you buy a boat; discover that you want a bigger or different style of boat; you return the boat to Boulder Boats; buy a different boat; sell the used one, and you still come out ahead financially. Stuart says, "That's how strong the sport boat market is."

He adds, "A big reason is that families have discovered that this is a sport involving them all. Other sports actually separate the family. For example, kids are dropped off at practice and picked up later by the parent.With boating, the whole family is part of the fun."

One of the most popular family sports is wakesurfing, using the Malibu, the largest inboard tow boat in the country. This boat is built for sport (wake) surfing. The company mantra is, Make Your Own Waves. You don't need the ocean and a big surf, which, unless you are highly skilled, takes a long time to master. Just about anyone can enjoy the fun of wakesurfing behind the sporty Malibu. The speed is just IO miles per hour, or one-third the speed to successfully tow a water skier.

"Even my three year old daughter enjoys the sport," Stuart laughingly reports. "We are definitely a family-oriented business. My wife, Kristina and I are co-owners of Boulder Boats, and we definitely practice what we sell. Boating helps promote family togetherness. We have two daughters, Alyssa and Sydney, and son Lars, who all look forward to our time wakesurfing on the weekends."
