Finding the perfect pre-owned boat
WHAT BOAT WILL SUIT YOU?
Inboards are very versatile and knowing what watersport you want to focus on can help narrow down your search. Skiers want smaller wakes to deal with which means that a shorter, smaller boat will fit you better. There are crossover models available but for the best ski performance you will want to look at a direct drive because they drive faster and handle easier. When it comes to wakeboarding and wakesurfing, bigger wakes are the end goal. V-drives have the best Wake and Wave making capabilities and If surfing and wakeboarding is your focus you will want to find a boat that has ballast. A ballast system will add extra weight to your boat and is the easiest way to make a bigger wake/wave. For the best possible performance look for boat with an integrated surf system so that you can have an easier time customizing your wave.

HOW MANY HOURS
Unlike cars, boat usage is measured through the number of hours rather than miles. When shopping for a Pre-owned model, especially in Wake and Surfboats, it is important to compare the hours to the condition of the boat. If the boat has been well maintained through its previous ownership then you can expect it to hold a higher retail value. Boats that have been neglected can lower your value, regardless of what the hour meter reads, so be mindful because it can help you out in the back-end when you decide to trade in for a new one.

TRAILER
The condition of the trailer is something that can be easily overlooked. If you don’t have a lake house or a spot in a marina then chances are you will have to tow your boat to the lake. This means that your trailer will be an important part to your boating operation and you should check any wear and tear that may cost you in the future. Here are some things to look for:
- Make sure the breaks are still working well. When you trailer the boat, you should be able to come to a smooth stop without any “bumping” noises.
- Take a look at the condition of the tires and make sure that there is no dry-rot visible and that there is plenty of tread left.
- Look deeply for any rust on the body of the trailer. Substantial rust could lead to further damage down the road that you want to avoid
- Check the trailer bunks to make sure that they are steady, and that they aren’t separating from the trailer. Also check the condition of the carpet on the bunks themselves. The carpet keeps you from scratching the fiberglass on the bottom of the boat.

GELCOAT
Before hopping in the boat go ahead and walk around the body, checking for any cracks in the fiberglass. Small spider cracks and scratches are usually just a cosmetic issue, but it can be a good indicator as to how that boat was handled. Cracks and scratches along the side and bottom could be a sign that the previous owner poorly docked and trailered the boat, but any deep are larger cracks could be a sign that further repairs are needed.

INTERIOR
Once you have checked all around the boat, go ahead and hop in to take a look at the carpet, seats, and all other parts of the interior. Again, these are all cosmetic things but you want to first look for rips, tears, or stains that could be fixed prior to purchase. Next look around at the carpet and make sure you can’t find any mildew growing around any corners of the boat. Another thing you’ll want to check is any loose wiring. Some people like to “Do it yourself” when wiring up stereos or amps, and many times this results in a sloppy job that either doesn’t look good, or won’t last.

TEST DRIVE
The final Test will be how the boat performs on the water. If you can, schedule a test drive and take your time out on the water. Really listen to how the boat sounds when it starts up and when you give it more throttle. The engine should sound smooth and there should be no vibration coming from the prop.
