1. Have a Safety Checklist

Before hitting the water check for all necessary safety equipment. In order to stay legal on the water you must carry an equivalent number of life jackets for each passenger aboard your vessel, a fire extinguisher, and a throw cushion. While it is legal to Surf and wakeboard in a NCGA vest, keep in mind, that will not replace your life jacket in the boat. Also, it’s never a bad idea to pack extra water and to have a first aid kit on board.

2. Check Over your boat

Before your boat touches the water be sure that all drain plugs are in, your batteries are charged, and you have enough gas to get you through the day. A smooth-running boat ensures a fun day on the lake!

3. Check the Weather

Don’t get too far ahead of yourself. There’s nothing worse than packing up for a fun day on the lake, only to find that you put yourself in the middle on a monsoon. So, before you head out, make sure rain and lightning are not in the forecast!

4. Use Common Sense

It is a rare thing to have the lake all to yourself, so be respectful of your fellow boaters and surfers. Always handle your boat at a safe speed, and be on the look-out for any buoys indicating shallow water, other vessels that may not see you, and keep an eye on where your surf wave may end up.

5. Be Careful with Alcohol

There’s nothing better than floating with your buddies while enjoying a refreshing drink in the summer sun, but keep in mind that use of alcohol can double your chances of an accident. We cannot stress enough the importance of having a designated driver on board, and never drink before you ride!
